Keynote Speaker - 'Scared sedentary? A community filled with physically literate people'

Amanda Stanec (PhD) was born and raised in Nova Scotia, Canada where she attended and played soccer for St. Francis Xavier University. Upon moving to the US, she attended Virginia Commonwealth University where she attained a Masters of Science with an emphasis in Physical Education and Sport Psychology. Completely devoted to her field, she enrolled in a PhD program in Kinesiology within the Curry School of Education at the University of Virginia where she was recognized as the outstanding doctoral student in her graduating year (2006). In 2012, Amanda founded Move Live Learn (, a company formed to ensure health, physical education, sport and education sectors collaborate outside of their individual silos. Move Live Learn is insistent that each project is approached with a social justice lens to optimize positive impact. Since founding Move Live Learn, Amanda has become well-respected for her contributions as Lead Writer for provincial wide physical education curriculum, University kinesiology and teacher education courses, leading sport research studies, and developing youth sport leadership and positive youth development programs. Further achievements include the publication of more than twenty articles as well as co-authoring several book chapters. Most recently, Amanda has led projects on behalf of: the International Olympic Committee, the Association of the Summer Olympic International Federations, the Jackie Joyner-Kersee Foundation, United World Wrestling, NFL Play 60, and Boys & Girls Clubs of America.


The keynote presentation will address how schools and communities can collaborate to support individuals' physical literacy journeys. Using the The Whole School, Whole Community, Whole Child (WSCC) model, Amanda will highlight how a community filled with physically literate people is a realistic goal when a collaborative and coordinated approach is taken. Delegates will leave this session with a plethora of ideas on how to make both short- and long-term impacts supporting their students' physical literacy journeys.
